At a bris, Circa 2003

Dr. Craig Singer is a board-certified dermatologist, pediatrician and mohel. He officiated at his first bris in 2001 and has performed thousands of circumcisions throughout his career. Dr. Singer was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA where he attended Beth Jacob Orthodox kindergarten and United Hebrew schools through the conservative movement. After the birth of his son, Dr. Singer was inspired to learn the ancient art of brit milah.

Dr. Singer’s surgical training:

Dr. Craig Singer is an expert in newborn circumcision and has performed more than 2,000 procedures. He initially trained in newborn circumcision through the Department of Obstetrics at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. In the fall of 2001, Dr. Singer traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia, to train with Dr. Neil Pollock, one of the world’s leading circumcision practitioners and researchers in the Mogen Clamp. Dr. Singer also traveled around North America comparing his surgical and anesthetic techniques with other mohalim. After returning to Detroit, Dr. Singer refined his surgical skills to create the optimal circumcision procedure. Dr. Singer founded Michigan Circumcision in 2012, a clinic dedicated to newborn circumcision. Over the past several years, Dr. Singer has developed a pain control protocol that includes a specialized anesthetic solution (extensively tested in his office with the vast majority of babies showing little to no discomfort) as well as a special sugar solution that provides maximal comfort to the baby. With a wealth of experience, Dr. Singer’s circumcision technique provides outstanding cosmetic results with minimal discomfort.

Dr. Singer’s religious training:

Dr. Singer is certified as a mohel by the Berit Mila Board of Reform Judaism. His religious studies were conducted under the supervision of Rabbi David Castiglione of Temple Beth El, Bloomfield Hills, MI. The curriculum included texts concerning Jewish identity, relevant portions of the Torah, Talmud, and Midrash, the ArtScroll series bris milah text, as well as Reform Responsa on bris mila. In addition, he studied the commentary of Rabbi Raphael Samson Hirsch on Bereshit, chapter 17, under the guidance of Rabbi Alon Tolwin of Aish Detroit.

Dr. Singer’s vast knowledge of medicine and Jewish law enables him to provide surgical expertise, a safe and effective method of pain control, and a ceremony rich in tradition.
